The Truth

Tennessee law closes polls at 7 p.m. in Central time counties and 8 p.m. in Eastern time counties, so the whole state closes at one moment. A voter who waits for 9 p.m. arrives an hour or more after the doors shut. The Secretary of State's office warned voters about the text at 12:23 p.m. Central on Election Day.

The Text

"All polling places in counties in the eastern time zone shall close at eight o'clock p.m. (8:00 p.m.) prevailing time and polling places in counties in the central time zone shall close at seven o'clock p.m. (7:00 p.m.) prevailing time."
